Why do you train?
Ahhhh, CrossFit Dupont. There is a lot you can say about what we have here. First in Fashion. A wide range of athletes who each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Motivated individuals who show up in the mornings and evenings despite of the heat, cold or humidity our gym takes on. Athletes who come recreationally, systematically or just never leave. PR City, SEXY Friday, and lots of glitter. Coaches with wide ranges of coaching styles from direct and informed to aggressive and Cali-esque, no words to describe her delivery. Unicorns. No other place like this, our athletes are unique, and as coaches, we couldn’t ask for a better group.
The coaching staff invests a lot of into each of our athletes. You all are our livelihood. The goal of the program is progressive training, constantly challenging you to get stronger, faster, and accomplish YOUR goals. I want to extend out an invitation to all of you, not just to the Paleo Pot Luck dinner June, 30th at 6pm, but to inform the coaching staff and your community about ‘why you train?’ Why are you suffering through 6 minutes of ball slams and sprints in 95 degrees? What is your purpose, drive, motivation to constantly push your limits day in and day out? We want to know! Goals are accomplished, races and meets are completed, but what remains constant, what keeps you coming back?
Share your drive with the community, and take the time to read the others. Great opportunity to get to know your fellow athletes who sweated all over that bench press before you. Thank you everyone for sharing. Oh, and I heard somewhere that there is a Paleo Pot Luck a week from Saturday. 6pm.

I was a sick kid and chubbier in my adolescence. Not baby-on-Maury chubby, but definitely not wanting to take your shirt off at pool parties kind of deal. And I’m from Florida so that happened quite often. I thinned out in high school but have never felt proud of my physique and still, to this day, feel weird in shirt-off situations. I think back on that and get bummed out. What a waste.
I’ve also had rheumatoid arthritis since I was 16. I’m ok now, but I went throw some years of weirdo medications: one that was also a cancer med (wtf?), one was monthly infusions done at a hospital, and then for years another was injections twice a day. All in the attempts to suppress my immune system. Sounds like a greeeeaat idea, right?
Late/after college I was obsessed with getting off all meds and starting looking into alternative treatments. Played around with chinese medicine and acupuncture, diet related interventions, etc (btw, I had a rheumatologist who actually told me that what you ate had NO effect on arthritis!).
Long story medium length my brother sent me a research article by Dr Cordain about two years ago and from there I did more research and learned about the wider Paleo approach to eating, and I noticed it more than anything else had a huge effect on my arthritis. Through learning everything I could about Paleo I of course heard a lot about Crossfit, so about 2 months ago I decided to give it a shot.
My hope is that strength training and conditioning will flip the right switches in my physiology and, along with diet, make me healthier. I’m only on mild NSAIDs now, but I want to kick those too.

WHY I TRAIN – There are so many benefits to training in the gym and what I love is how well it translates to everyday life outside of the gym. Not to get too “The Secret” on everyone, but I feel better, my mood is better, and I don’t kill people at work (I just mame them). Everyone wins. Up until about 4 years ago, I was pretty fat. Seriously…I have pictures.
I had one good thing going for me at the time–Kathy. She was my girlfriend then, and I was lucky enough to marry her a couple years later. Outside of that, however, I was fat, sick, tired, lazy and chalk full of self-esteem for no real reason. I hadn’t accomplished anything. I still don’t know how I tricked Kathy into liking me. It sure as hell wasn’t my ’86 Subaru Wagon or my sweet gig at Jamba Juice.
But, I grew up with schools and parents that told me all the time just how special and wonderful I was. I was great in every way and things would just happen for me. Don’t get me wrong, I understand what I was trying to do, but all my classmates thought they were special too. We were all snowflakes, and like snowflakes we were going to float through life and everyone would love us and try to catch us on their tongues…or something like that.
Turns out, that’s complete horseshit.
Being a snowflake kept me lazy. Being a snowflake made me fat. Being a snowflake ensured that I had around 8 colds a year.
With some gentle nudging from Kathy with a small change here and there, we started to turn oil tanker that was my fat ass. Example: We cut Taco Bell down to JUST once a week, then JUST once a month. It was brutal. I joined a gym. Got a personal trainer and figured out that the only way I was going to change myself was to put in the effort. I had to sweat, eat right, sleep right, and do a number of things I didn’t want to do. I had to overcome years of being lazy and thinking it was perfectly okay.
Ultimately, I realized that I wasn’t a goddamned snowflake. Things weren’t going to happen for me because I was inherently great. I had to work my ass for them. Once I realized that, so many other aspects of my life changed. I got real jobs, and got promoted. I improved relationships with family and friends because I finally put effort into them. My self-esteem finally came from real things.
So, long story short, I train because it helps me remember that I’m not a snowflake. I have to work for the things that I want, and continually reach for things that are just outside my grasp if I want to achieve anything meaningful.
Oh, and because I want to kick Tyler Brooks-Shulkey’s ass. He made fun of me for being fat for my entire childhood. One day I will run into him in a dark alley and I need to be ready.

LIke Jim, I started training in high school. At 6’3″ and 140 I was little weak. Some weightlifting and typical high school diet got me to 170. Still thin, but stronger. It wasn’t until I started training with a good friend who was an undefeated track sprinter in Maryland that I started getting serious. Heavy squats and deadlifts, plyos, protein shakes…soon I weighed 220 and was a playing basketball with a vengeance. Rebounds were easier, taking contact was easier. Jump shot? Still erratic.
So that’s how I got started. Why do I train today? What gets me up? It’s the same stuff that motivated me to start Balance Gym. Getting outside, getting dirty and sweaty, enjoying the weather outside – perfect or not. Prior to Balance, as a trainer at WSC, I was stuck in a sterile and safe environment: pretty machines, air conditioning, soft mats. The first Balance boot camps were outside – rain or shine, cold or hot. Running through Rock Creek Park, pushups in the rain, these things made my day.
Do I follow a program today? Sometimes. Do I track all my weights and reps? On occasion. Do I practice new skills? Infrequently. Does this mean I lack progress? Maybe. To me, it’s about training everyday and allowing for the flexibility that a strict program may not offer.
As for training clients, I love to see people improve. From the 70 year-old woman who deadlifts her weight and who’s bone density improved again; the 14 year old girl coming off of ACL surgery to play soccer again and get honorable mention in the Post; and the “getting-married-soon” guy who lost 30 pounds before his wedding….they all keep me motivated to train.
I train for a myriad of reasons. The one that sticks out as the most prominent manifested before my second deployment to Afghanistan. I was leading 8 Marines and I realized that in combat my body and mind would be taxed to the extremes all while trying to manage subordinates. I took up the montra: “when the shit hits the fan, it won’t be the equipment that fails”. Training and training hard is really just insurance for the “equipment” that is the human body. Today even though I’m no where near Afghanistan, you never know when you might need that second of breathing room achieved by months of conditioning.
That’s why I train.

I train for a lot of the same reasons that have already been talked about: the community at CFD (top notch), vanity, not killing my coworkers, more focused at work, staying healthy, the workout high but pushing myself is the real reason. I’ve played soccer competitively since I was 10 and I’m very thankful to have had nothing more than muscle strains and sprains throughout my “illustrious” career. I picked up CF as a way to become a better player but due to time constraints from school I had to cut back on playing. It was hard to stop doing something you love but I knew I could focus more energy towards CF. You guys may not realize it but you all push me to want more and I hope you know that when I’m encouraging you to get one more rep or to focus more on form it’s only because I want you to want more for yourself. As some of you know I recently completed the GORUCK Challenge and so if it’s not already known let’s make it official: there is definitely something wrong with me. I use the words “fun”, “amazing”, “ear-to-ear smiling” when I talk about my 12-hour GRC experience. I bring up the GRC because I hit a wall during the challenge. After 8 or so hours (we had no watches all I know is that I watched the sun set and I watched it rise) of traversing the city, doubt went racing through my head, the rucksack felt like 150 lbs., I was tired, and I was especially tired of walking through the marsh. But I got my shit together and I channeled that energy for good. My team finished the GRC hours after my almost meltdown and it was great hitting that wall. I not only overcame it but I learned from it. I agree with Spencer wholeheartedly that our bodies are incredible machines. I want do another GRC or some other GORUCK event because I want to push. I know I’m part of the old guard at CFD but because of that I’ve had the opportunity to train with just about everyone at CFD and there isn’t a day when I don’t think “Shit Alex he/she is doing that so you need to up your game.” Yeah our box is crazy hot right now but we don’t belong to a spa or wellness center. We’re a CF box! If you don’t have sweat pouring down your face after some Jimmy Buffets then you probably should have stayed home. We train the way we do because we want more from ourselves and since we train in a group you want more out of our classmates. Great soccer players aren’t just born; they are constantly looking for ways to become better. The harder you push yourself the harder you push the group and the stronger collectively we become. I’ll end with what I think is a Cali-ism: “You’ll never fully understand yourself by living in a bubble.” I’m pretty sure I’ll be paying the price for that in upcoming classes.
I had always lifted weights and trained half ass in high school and college with no real dedication, relying on my 90-10 lacrosse skills to get me by. Then my senior year I really took a liking to it and began to train on a regular basis but with the wrong program.
Chris pushed me into Crossfit Football and it’s changed me forever. It has because with it, I know I can mentally and physically face any challenges I have working as a police officer. Whether it be a foot-pursuit at Deanwood in 90 degree heat with 40lbs of gear doing muscleups over fences in the hood or a big brawl at L’Enfant plaza I know that I will come out on top because it’s what I train for.
It’s painful sitting around in roll call knowing that 97% of the people in there couldn’t save themselves in a fight for their life or have the ability to buddy carry or buddy drag a fellow officer or civilian to safety. When Chris introduced me to this program and pushed me I knew I was no longer going to be a liability at work but an asset. And that I’ll be coming home safe every night I work because of it.

Why I train:
I truly believe that fitness and training is more than just a physical journey, but more of a self-evolution between your body, mind and “spirit.” I think to make the journey worthwhile, you have to attempt to discover what your true potential is in each of those areas at some point in life and not just settle for “good enough.” The attitude that results from this approach to training has an interesting side effect in that you get to learn an amazing amount about who you are as a person as well. I’ve learned that I can train myself to be mentally strong, and that is really why I continue to do this. So that I know at the end of the day that I have the mental (and physical) resolve to get myself out of whatever shit life has thrown at me.
Other reasons that are just as important:
1) The endorphins from a max effort successful lift are better than any drug.

I’m both happy and enraged Tex asked this question. I’m happy because it’s great to see why everyone does this day in and day out. I’m enraged because I’m not sure if I’ve ever really asked myself the question honestly.
Why do this? Why put yourself through the constant pain of training? The struggle of missing rep after rep, dealing with injuries, aches, pains, surgeries. Wouldn’t it be easier to simply go home after work and watch on The Kardashians on repeat while shoveling S’mores granola bars into your face? They’re healthy – they have granola!
Sure, it’d be easier. But fuck easy. Buttfuck easy. Everything in the world now is designed to make your life easier. No one wants to work for it anymore. On the platform, it’s different. No one helps you get that bar off the ground. No one puts it over your head for you.
I met Mike Robertson aka “the knee guy” a few months ago. I told him about all of my knee problems. I told him I wanted to avoid surgery as best I could. I told him anything I tried – physical therapy, manual therapy, rest, ice, heat, dry needling – didn’t work. Our exchange:
“You may need to consider becoming a more hip-dominant guy.”
“Well, I kinda like Olympic weightlifting.”
“I’m sure you do. Basically, you’re gonna find out how much you like Olympic weightlifting.”
I had surgery a month later. Because I would never give up what weightlifting has given me. The strength, the focus, the confidence, the self-awareness, the discipline.

My inspiration for training, first for marathons/triathlons and now for crossfit, started when I read a quote out of Lance’s book “It’s Not About the Bike” that I have carried with me.
“Once, someone asked me what pleasure I took in riding for so long. ’Pleasure?’ I said. ’I don’t understand the question.’ I didn’t do it for pleasure, I did it for pain.”
Health, vanity, being really ridiculously strong are all things I aspire for when training. But the underlying reason I do it is because training involves pain, sacrifice, and not everyone is willing to do it, making the rewards that much greater. Training shows that you respect yourself, that you have the self worth of yourself to make sure that you utilize your body to its ultimate potential, and you flex your resolve to higher and higher limits. It’s why I’ve run marathons, triathlons, 200 mile relay races, and its why I joined Crossfit. Going to work in the morning still sore from that morning’s SWOD & DWOD, I feel a sense of accomplishment that I am pushing myself to boundaries yet unknown within myself before everyone else around me even woke up. For the first time in a LONG time I look forward to working out now, working with Dupont has given me so many new goals that I will achieve, and I’m going to do it through a lot of pain and determination. Also I really want to be able to do pullups…a lot of them.

Tex asked us this morning to articulate our motivations for CF, and I think it’s a great question.
I do it for the senoritas.
I do it because I want to challenge myself. In high school, and even in college, the only thing I excelled in was half-assery. But, in the last few years, I’ve started to realize that if I commit myself to something, I can achieve it. Law school was that recent challenge, and I rose to it—I made law review, I had my article selected for publication, etc. Now I want to do the same thing with fitness, because I need to prove to myself I can see this to completion.
I do it because I have a family history of hypertension and I want to tell death “not today.”
I do it because I want my pants to fit well.
I do it because, even though I’ve only been at CF Dupont a short time, I love the sense of community and the willingness to accept n00bs like me.
I do it because I want to learn how to do a strict pull-up.

When I think back to growing up I can’t remember a time where I wasn’t active, playing a sport or competing, whether it was in first grade as the only girl who played soccer at recess or the fact that as a 6 year old I declared myself an “outside girl,” my better term for a Tomboy; I would not be caught dead with a doll and if I wasn’t moving I was antsy. In high school I was a 4 sport athlete constantly being told by teachers and coaches I would burnout, wasn’t going to play in college because by the time I got there I would be “tired.” I think I took their advice and ran the opposite direction, always looking for what’s next.
Fast forward to college I spent four years waking up every day with teammates who pushed themselves to the limit to run a faster mile, lift a heavier weight or win a conference title. Like many college athletes I graduated with a void, what do I do now…? I tried pick up sports but just playing wasn’t enough maybe I am just too serious but I needed drive, competition and dedication from the people around me. So I thought, alright, I need competition and dedication… train for a marathon that is it, NOPE that is lonely, OK I need a team… triathlon that is IT I will love it: competition, team, dedication DONE well 5 triathlons and half Ironman’s later my joints were not happy and I was still not satisfied. I am a sprinter, power is my skill. In my trial and error approach to post college athletic discovery, I found CrossFit and have not been disappointed since the day I stepped foot into my first gym. Sure I have been disappointed in myself, my performance but that only drives me to try harder to see what I can accomplish next. So why do I come? I come for the desire to constantly improve never being satisfied. heck I’ll say I am addicted to the adrenalin that comes from pushing yourself to the limit but I truly think I keep coming back for the people, I am given the opportunity to workout every day among a community who I consider to be close friends and growing family. I impress myself on a daily basis but more importantly I am constantly impressed and driven by the people around me; if it wasn’t for them I would still be on my search for what’s next…?

Why do I train? I could write pages about this, but here’s the short answer:
I train because I like it- the anticipation, the challenge, the camaraderie, and the post-workout high. I also train because that’s just what I do- I can’t imagine who I would be or what the hell I would do with myself if I decided to stop.
I train because I don’t like who I am when I don’t.
I played squash in college and loved every minute of it – well, except the series of cortisol shots and the time when I threw out my back and didn’t compete for about 16 months. I remember the first day when I returned to training with my college team after my injury, and I didn’t recognize half the people on the team nor the head coach, who jumped aboard a few months after I left. I missed out on so much in those 16 months, not because I pushed myself too hard, but because I pushed myself to the point where I had horrible form on the court. That day, I decided to always train hard but smart.
Enter Crossfit.

Why I started training- Basically I was given the option to start weight training or be expelled from middle school. I was a fat, lazy 7th grader, and a total trouble maker that had already racked up over twenty days of expulsion and was on my way out the door. My guidance counselor gave me a final choice to join his after school workout program for juvenile delinquents so I quickly agreed to be spared the wrath of my parents and the unknown. I hated it at first but soon I grow to love the pain and looked forward to staying after school with the thugs to pump some iron. Fast forward to freshman year of high school and I try out for football and wrestling squad, become the strength coaches personal assistant (for all 4 years)and basically grew up. Never got suspended again, got better grades, made my parents proud for both my athletic exploits as well as my marginally better grades. Training has always grounded me, honed my focus, and given me confidence. You know what they say- find a job you enjoy, and you’ll never work a day in your life. I think I have.
My whole life I’ve grappled with a relentless inner engine. I’m hardly ever at peace. Now, with four kids, a law practice, and a new business, a clear choice has emerged: find peace in the intensity or fail on all fronts.
My Practice at Crossfit Dupont takes me to a place beyond exercise-as-release, beyond personal challenge, beyond exertion, beyond words. I am consistently taken where there is only breath and two realities: will or failure. In the silence between these, I’m at peace.
When I first started Crossfit- the first time I have ever lifted weights- the trainer put 95 pounds on the bar and told me to back squat it. I couldn’t. Later, I hit a roadblock for months at 195. Then I hit a wall at 225. Now my next goal is ten more pounds and an even 250.
I Crossfit for a number of reasons. For the amazing friends (and roommates I have met), without whom my life would be a lot less colorful, for the fun (glitter!), and for finding out what I can do. I won’t say I train to be skinny- with my ass that will never happen. I will never look like my high school self, or be twenty pounds lighter; which was my goal when my fitness regime consisted of half hour stints on the elliptical. Not reaching that impossible goal really makes you feel like shit Instead, I shifted my outlook. I train to be the best version of me. I train to be strong, and as I get stronger, faster, and more powerful I gain more confidence. I don’t look like I did, but I look and feel better than I ever have. It’s hard, but the gains make the work worth it. There is still a lot I need to improve on (a strict pull up, doing the Roger Rabbit with some semblance of rhythm), but I train because I have the confidence to know that someday I will get it. Then I’ll move on to the next challenge.

Why do I train? I guess I have a lot of reasons. I’ve always been pretty short, and fairly lanky, and about a year and a half ago I decided to try to change that (I didn’t really grow, and am told I will be stuck at 5′ 9″ despite my father being 6′ 3″ :/ ). I gained about 10 lbs before starting college, and in my first year gained another 15.
At college I met one of my new best friends, named Chris, who played football for his highschool and wanted to get back in to the level of strength he had then. We always trained together, nearly every day of the weak, demanding that the other person go despite excuses such as being tired. Chris could always lift a lot more weight than me, but I could run faster, do more pull-ups and generally out-do him at core exercises. This led to us competing a lot and we each decided to maintain our training over the summer.
I spent some time doing parkour back in 11th grade and had ended up hearing a lot about crossfit as well. Because of this I decided to start crossfit this summer, in order to improve my strength and start to catch up to Chris.
So far its been a blast, and I’m always psyched to check the site the night before to see what workouts I’ll be doing the next day!
Why I Train:
The bliss walking home after waking up for, jogging to, and working hard during the 6:15am class.
Crossfit (and Jim’s strength class) makes my whole day — my whole life — happier. The mornings gives me stamina for the rest of a happy, busy, and sometimes stressful life.
I want to be strong enough to do all the activities that I want to do — whether in the gym, on a mountain, or anywhere else.
When Tex asked me this question last week I immediately knew the answer. I debated on posting a decoy response but was encouraged to do otherwise. So here goes…
I train for the control. There are so many variables that affect me (and everyone) on a daily basis. I am often frustrated, confused, or upset by something as trivial as a barrista’s bad attitude or as serious as a relationship gone bad. However, in training there is truth. (Another quote for you there, Tex) Your training directly reflects your work ethic and physical effort. I take comfort in the purity and simplicity of training.
When I struggle with the things around me that don’t make sense, training makes perfect sense. I understand training and that’s why I do it.
I feel blessed that training is fun for me. I feel badly for the people who feel like they “have to” go to the gym and slog through an hour-long jog on the treadmill.
So why do I train? Here are some bite-sized reasons why….
I train for intensity.
I can be a very intense person — and not always for good. If I allow my internal energy to get pent up, my internal stress levels skyrocket. I train because it gives me an outlet for my intensity and allows me to channel it in positive ways.
I train for goals.
I am a goal setter. I like to know that each and every day, I’m trying to do just a little more — getting just a little better. And in that process, I’m willing to accept taking small steps backward in order to move forward. Training is a proxy for the way I want to live the rest of my life — moving forward, step by step.
I train for community
There is nothing more satisfying than being around people who are going to push you and make you better — no matter what it is. Much of my motivation to train comes from being around people who make you more competitive and who make you feel like you are a part of something special.
I train because I need it.
I have a very addictive personality. Without training and goal setting, I know I would be living an unhealthy lifestyle. Five years ago, I took a look in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. I was 145 pounds, a heavy smoker, drinker, and heavy user of all kinds of other substances. I knew I had to do something. So, I decided to do some trail running. I turned into a pretty decent mountain runner, but had to stop because I injured my knee.
This was about three years ago in New Hampshire. When my knee healed, I decided that I was sick of being 145 pounds. I started going to a new gym and saw a bunch of huge powerlifters training like I’d never seen. I began talking to them, copying them, learning about their training techniques — and sure enough I got stronger. I read forums like EliteFTS and T-Nation and picked up 5/3/1, a simple strength program that gave me a great foundation to work from. That was two years ago. About a year ago, I moved here and started lifting at Balance — again meeting new people, gaining a new perspective from crossfitters, and continuing my evolution from a beginner to an intermediate lifter.
Without this change in my life — and the subsequent motivation that comes with it — it’s very likely that I would still be on a very unhealthy path.
I train to learn.
I have just started in my lifting career. And like every other pursuit in life, the more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know. Training for me is a marathon — a lifelong pursuit for strength and health that will require continuing education. I plan on keeping an open mind and applying my same desire to learn to my training life.
Of course I train for all the superficial reasons people have already mentioned–I want to look better, I want to be stronger than all of my friends, I want to be able to kick someone’s ass if I have to. But more than anything, I train for the incredible satisfaction I get out of accomplishing physical and mental feats that I once thought were impossible. When I was younger (and “stockier”), doing a single pull-up seemed impossible; I recently did one with 110lbs strapped around my waist. Every night when I see the DWOD posted I think there is no way I am going to be able to do that; I’m never fast but I always finish. When I did my first 300# back squat a couple weeks ago, I was high for days. The best part about the accomplishments is that, like Cali mentioned above, they are a direct reflection of your personal work ethic and physical effort. There are few variables. You aren’t dependent on a good pass from a teammate or the right play call by your coach.
All that said, while the accomplishments are personal, they are more satisfying and come more frequently in community. I have only been doing crossfit for a month, but I am absolutely convinced it is best way. Training under incredible coaches and alongside incredibly fit and motivated people leaves me little choice but to train harder and faster. I am consistently challenged and inspired.
I train because I want to stay healthy, enjoyment, vanity, but must importantly to be a healthy dad. I want to see my daughters grow and stay active with them; this is one of my main motivators.
I never trained in an environment such as CrossFit Dupont and I really like it.
I’ve been surfing online more than 3 hours these days, but I never found any fascinating article like yours. It’s beautiful price enough for me. In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the internet can be a lot more useful than ever before.
I feel a little bad posting this since I’ve been out for a few weeks, but I think this is a great way to share our motivations. Plus, I have good excuses for being out/blah blah blah.
I train to get over my impostor syndrome. I’ve been plagued by self doubt my whole life, and was practically paralyzed by it as a kid. Especially when it came to anything athletic. I was the poor, chubby girl hiding in the corner in gym class, crying when the dodgeball would finally hit me. I competed in swimming for a couple of years, but despite some success I hated my coaches and I’m sure they hated me. I was weak-willed and scared. I’ve worked hard over the years to improve my attitude. Training is how I prove to myself that I have some athletic ability, no matter how much I doubt it every time I walk into the gym.
I train for health–mine and Dave’s both. I’m really proud of what he’s done, and happy to have been a part of it. But the journey will never end. We both have a lot of genetic and learned health demons we will have to fight forever. Every workout, home-cooked meal, and full night’s sleep is a big middle finger to my family history of physical and mental illness. More importantly, it’s my way of refusing helplessness. So many people feel helpless in the face of health problems. If your health is a priority, you work at it. You can’t fend off every illness, but I personally feel much better knowing that I’ve tried. I train to empower myself and, I hope, be a good example my family and friends.
I train for mental toughness. Training is both very humbling and very ego-boosting, often at the same time.
I train because I like to challenge myself in a variety of ways. Sometimes my goals conflict with each other–there are only 24 hours in a day–but more often they reinforce one another. The confidence I gain in the gym permeates my entire life.
I train because I want to inspire other women to get strong. Strong is beautiful.
I do crossfit, in particular, because of the camaraderie, thoughtful coaching, and positive reinforcement. (And I used to hate all coaches, so this is really saying something!) I also love that I get to witness so much bad-assery. It really does inspire me to push myself.

There have been over 86,106 benefits FROM doing CrossFit, and being a part of this community specifically, than I ever could have imagined- confidence, friendship, strength gains, positive body image, the list could go on for a hideously long time. The thing that brought me TO CrossFit and training is my love of movement. CrossFit is a playground to me, and every moment is pure joy.
That feeling after a really hard work out—really, there’s nothing else like it and it keeps me motivated to train on a regular basis. But, there’s more to it than that. A couple years ago, I started thinking about long term health and wellness and began casually reading about nutrition/wellness on a regular basis. The more I read about women’s health, the more I realized I needed to be in a strength program now (and always) if I want to be active and healthy when I’m 50 plus. Eventually my research brought me around to the Paleo/Primal movement and I found that the basic concepts really appealed to me and my past experiences. Working out has always helped me deal with stress and to sleep better; now, with a better understanding of the relationship of hormones/diet/exercise, I finally understand why I need to train and that is my primary source of motivation. Its also nice to be fit enough to sign up for the occasional race or go for really long hikes/backpacking at a moment’s notice. I want to be able to do that forever, therefore I train now. Besides, it just feels good.

I train so when I did a triathlon this weekend and they wrote my age on my calf, I didn’t feel bad. I felt happy that everyone would know they got their a$$ kicked by an old lady.

I love challenges, I am addicted to them. Challenging myself, seeing how far I can push myself drives me to success.
I train because it is a constant challenge that involves so many parts. To train is not just to lift weights: to train is a life choice that involves lifting weights properly, eating right, getting rest, and maintaining long-term goals. Each one of these facets is a challenge at which I strive to succeed. At the end of the day if I can tell myself I that I succeeded at these individual challenges, I am happier person.
I train to maintain that healthy challenge in my life and I can’t imagine not doing it.

-I want to be the best (2 individual college swimming records and a few relay records)
-I enjoy sport, the outdoors, and bonding with others through physical activity ( CFDP community, Barbell Club, paleo dinners)
-I need to relieve stress from the day or be able to concentrate on something besides what I’m worried/depressed over (job, relationships, family, life)
-I want us to win (any team sport I’ve played)
