CFDu’s ‘Why I Train’ series continues with Jonathan S.’s amazing story. Thank you for sharing, JSki!

When Diet and Exercise Fail
-Jonathan S.

The short story:

To NEVER look or feel the way I did 5 years ago when that picture was taken (285lbs, 42in waist, Blood Pressure 165/110 (very high)) Currently 210lbs, 34inch wiast, BP 135/75 (acceptable by all medical standards) )

The long story:

The physical/mental aspect of training is a big reason why I come day in and day out.  Thr foundations of which began with state I found myself in 5 years ago.  To put it plainly I was a wreck.  Eating out too much, drinking too much and of course not working out.  I was absolutly miserable at work and in life.  Alot of it (I would soon find out) had to do with something so simple: diet and exercise.  As a pharma rep I sold Blood Pressure medications and would always laugh at the tagline “when diet and exercise fail”.  For most people who would be considered unheathly, they just plain fail at those two things: diet and exercise (I do understand that their is a population of people who through genetics are predisposed to many illnesses (inculding mental)).  Failing to eat a proper diet and exercise is where I found myself 5 years ago.  After a long and miserable time with a horrible diet and lack of exercise, as well as a major holiday fiasco (I am grateful my family still talks to me) I decided that I needed to change.  I needed to stop eating like shit and begin working out.  I began this “fat smash” diet (plant based with limited meat and no processed food) and dropped 20 lbs the first month.  The amazing thing and I still remember it like it was yesterday, was how I felt waking up the 3rd day after the diet.  I wasn’t groggy, I had energy and just plain felt good inside. I smiled in the mirror, something I have not done in a long time.  I swore on that day I would never go back to my old habits.

5 months later I was down 40 lbs and saw someone doing what seemed like a crazy workout at my local Gold’s.  I had heard about the “300″ workout and had read something about CF online, so I asked her.. Long story short she introduced me to Balance/CF/Functional training and I was pretty happy with my results until I saw the level of energy coming from the new CF classes at Dupont.  I made the change and at 35 (going on 36) have never been stronger, leaner or felt better in my life.  I love the daily physical challenge of the WOD’s.  I love pushing myself as hard as I can go and love being wiped out on the couch for hours after a killer workout.  The fact that I catch my girlfriend Natalia (who loved me when I was a chubby 225lbs) checking me out now that I am a bit leaner (and way stronger) is an added bonus.  Mentally, thanks in part to my new physical confidence, as well as a better diet, I feel great. My mind is at peace and with so many endorphins pumping through, from the WOD’s I am usually a pretty happy and positive guy.

The social aspect of CF is the other reason why I come and train.  I am a social person who loves learning from other people.  CF has introduced me to many people from diverse backrounds, all of whom I am grateful to learn from.  I love the community that we have and truly enjoy that while we are focused on our own bettermint, we all take the time to encourage and help each other out.  The coaches, and other athletes I have come to befreind are a big reason why I show up and push myself (in hopes of pushing them) each day.  Whether its Robin giving me tips on my squat, Lauren pumping me up before a lift or Satin and others cheering from the sidelines, working out in this enviorment with these people is an experience in itself.  It almost makes me feel guilty when I have to miss a day, as I don’t want to miss the feeling I get working out with the other atheletes…. the feeling of being a part of team and receiving encouragement and support.
