Flow, Bros, and Unicorns.

School is back in session and this is my favorite time of year! Many of our newer members may be unaware that I spend a portion of my free time coaching lacrosse at a local university. Lacrosse season is in the spring, but I spend a lot time with the team in the fall when I get to strength and condition them. Those CFDunicorns that have been around for a long time can tell when I’m in lax season pretty easily. All my negative, anxious energy is spent on those youth, so I am all smiles for my CrossFitters that listen and talk with me instead of back at me in class. I trade my abundance of Lululemon swag for baggy, strangely patterned shorts and t shirts to match. I grow my Fall Flow out. And, most notably, my usage of the word ‘Bro’ quintuples, bros.

I’m sure everyone remembers going back to school in Fall, so you know exactly where I am coming from. New people, new gear, new energy! Each year we get roughly 10-15 new freshman to the team. All with different experience levels in the weight room, and all with different experiences dealing with a strength coach. I use a little more aggressive tactics with the lax team than in class, and if you can believe it, a little more free wheeling with my language selection. But for good reason!

The approach I take with all of the new guys on the team is to be a hardass. That carries a whistle. Bro. As I get to know each of the new guys on the team I can adjust my volume and intensity of my motivation to each individual until I find what they respond too. It’s an art really, yelling at kids. I use this same approach with every new face that walks through the door of the gym, maybe not as harsh, but just want to set the tone for what to expect. It takes time to get to know everyone and how each individual is motivated, and that is where the challenge, fun in coaching is.

There are a lot of new faces these days around the Du, and I’m sure every single one of them is asking what is going on with the unicorns. It’s simple really, we work extremely hard on getting stronger and faster every day we are in the gym. We focus on fixing our weaknesses instead of hiding them. We continually set new goals and put ourselves in a position to reach them to move onto the next. Every day we are working towards becoming healthier, happier and on Friday’s, sexier. The unicorn is our reminder that we can have the drive, focus and competitive fire, but still have our jokes and fun on the side. Always demand more of yourself, but enjoy every minute of it, bro.
