I put this photo up on the CFDu myFace page when I found it and wanted to get some feedback about what our athletes thought of this PSA. More info on the ads can be found here, and I encourage you to watch all of the videos. Is this campaign going to be effective? Why or why not?

How active were you as a kid? What is the difference between then and now? Is it children’s diets, recess being cut, or ignorance by some parents about healthy practices? What do you see that can change? How are you going to approach fitness with your kids? Share your thoughts to comments.

    THOUGHTS

Not sure what kind of impact this campaign will have. People have an amazing ability to filter the world. I also feel like using these kids this way is a bit exploitative. It’s not their fault, and if I was a fat kid and I saw these ads, it would just bum me out and make me feel even more different and isolated. I think only the “Why Am I Fat” video hits close to the right tone, because it targets the parents.

In my view, child obesity and health problems are 100% the parent’s responsibility. Granted, we don’t have policies in place to make raising healthy kids easy (grain/corn subsidizing, school lunches, diminishing physical education in schools, etc), but that’s your fucking kid, their lives are in your hands and you need to do everything you can to make sure they thrive. And that means educating yourself on proper health and nutrition, leading by example, and making sure your kids follows suit.

I have absolutely amazing and loving parents and they did a great job raising me, but I wish they focused more on this area. When I was a toddler I ate cheerios and gatorade because I had a diary allergy. I remember being in middle school and putting down ROWS of Oreos. I was active, I played sports, but that shit catches up to you and I was chubby in middle school. And part of me gets angry and thinks “Why the fuck were their even Oreos in the house?!” Also, my dad was a runner, and while my brother and I sometimes followed him on our bikes which was cool, I don’t ever remember him taking a more active roll and inviting me to run with him or showing me proper form or stretches or whatever.

Again, they were fantastic and loving parents, and I’m not mad that they didn’t do the best they could because they absolutely did, with the information they had. But I do wish they focused on cultivating a knowledge of health and fitness and making that a larger roll in my life.

I think a large part of that is they never had to focus on it themselves. They grew up in a different time and obesity was far from the norm. I think the difference is simply that they played a lot more and ate way less processed foods.

I plan on raising my kids with a focus on health and fitness (among many other areas, of course). Eating clean, whole, non-gut irritating, anti-inflammatory foods will be the norm. I’m not going to give them food phobias or make them little weirdos about it, but bad shit will no be in the house. If they have something at a friend’s house, fine. If they have something at school, fine. But as far as I have influence, they will eat what I eat. They will see their dad exercise and maintain his body. I will lead by example.
